Caffé 817 817 Washington St./9th St.; downtown. For breakfast, this sleek, modern, very Italian paninoteca (sandwich bar) prepares a perfectly poached organic egg, squeezes a vibrantly colorful glass of blood orange juice, and brews superb coffees using a state-of-the-art espresso machine and Illy beans imported from Trieste. Note that “a latte” is made with filtered coffee and served French-style in a big bowl, whereas “a regular latte” is made with espresso and served in a tall glass. Lunch items include assorted housemade soups, polentas, salads, and panini. Add to these choices sun-brewed iced tea, Tuscan wines, fresh juices, and Italian Moretti beer from the Tyrolian area of Udine, and life is good. A picnic box can be prepared with a call by 2 p.m. the day before needed. All this and walls graced by the work of local artists, too!
